Measuring social & economic value

Productivity boost from volunteering

Volunteering doesn’t just benefit individuals or communities needing support – it has a tangible positive impact on those who do it, and society as a whole.

Individuals who give their time find it boosts their purpose and therefore their sense of identity and self-worth. In addition, the skills they learn, experience they gain and connections they make are proved to enhance job opportunities through improved career paths or a route back into work.

The benefits are so great that research analysis by Pro Bono Economics shows that if every employee had access to volunteering opportunities, the UK’s net productivity would rise by around £2billion a year.

Shaping The Future is working alongside researchers to develop a shared methodology enabling charities to measure and quantify the real-world value of volunteering and present its economic benefits.
